It's a bird.. it's a plane... its a... car?

Remember the Jetsons? I remember that as a child I was always fascinated by the marvelous inventions that this cartoon suggested would be coming in the future, and perhaps most iconic of all these would be the flying car. In my youth I foolishly believed that by the time I had entered my 30's such things would already be old news, but sadly man remains (mostly) rooted to the ground.

Well, an article featured over on CNET News gives us a glimpse of the first realization of the dream for flying cars. It seems that a company called Terrafugia has been approved and is beginning manufacturing of a commercial flying automobile which is scheduled for release in 2012. This new vehicle, being called the "Transition" will hit the market with a price tag of about $250,000 (USD).

While this might not be the same as the flying car that George Jetson zipped across the sky in, it is certainly the first major step towards realizing this dream. Terrafugia reports there are already about 100 preorders for the Transition aircraft, and it will be interesting to see how this new industry evolves over the next few years.
